What happens when a filmmaker, her retired doctor father, and a car full of hay hit the open road? You get “Cow Trip,” a beautiful story of compassion that has captured hearts across the internet.
When filmmaker Joanna Zelman learned of two calves in need of a new beginning, she didn’t just share the news—she took action. Recruiting her father for an epic 600-mile journey, the duo set out on a mission to bring two tiny calves, Mickey and Moose, to their forever home at Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary in Potomac, Maryland.
An Unexpected Connection
The journey was more than just a long drive; it was a life-changing experience for the rescuers themselves. Zelman’s father, a retired physician, wasn’t sure what to expect. However, the moment he met Mickey, the connection was instant.
“I didn’t think I was gonna have such an attachment,” he shared in the documentary. “We’re going to save his life.”
The trip wasn’t without its hurdles. When a minor health scare cropped up on the road, the retired doctor’s instincts kicked in. But as soon as the two calves, Mickey and Moose, began snuggling and comforting one another in the back of the van, a sense of peace took over. It was clear these two were meant to be together.
Living the Dream at Rosie’s Farm Sanctuary
Upon arriving at the sanctuary, the transformation was immediate. After a standard month of rest and quarantine, the “boys” were finally given the green light to explore their new world.
Today, four years later, Mickey and Moose are thriving:
- Mickey: The “lovable goofball” of the farm, always on the hunt for his next snack.
- Moose: A “gentle free spirit” who enjoys quiet moments gazing across the sunny Maryland pastures.
A Legacy of Hope
While the documentary, recently featured on The Dodo, serves as a tribute to the animals we cherish, it also highlights the power of family working together for a good cause.
“Four years ago, they were two rescued calves on a road trip toward hope,” the sanctuary shared. “Now they are giant, joyful boys living the kind of life they were never supposed to have.”
Mickey and Moose are now inseparable “best friends-slash-brothers,” proving that a little bit of mileage and a whole lot of heart can truly change the world.
