By the time the plane was in the air, the new mother was running on empty.

The flight was traveling from Newark Liberty International Airport to Grand Rapids, Michigan, on September 2nd. A flight attendant for Republic Airways, Monique Harris, was working onboard when she noticed the young mother struggling with exhaustion.
The woman eventually nodded off with her baby on her lap.
Harris was keeping an eye on the situation when she saw the infant begin to slip. She stepped over and took the baby, making sure the child was secure while the mother continued sleeping.
The mother had no idea that a passenger nearby was documenting the moment.
John W. Frehse saw what Harris had done and took a photograph. He later shared the image online, explaining that the flight attendant had noticed the mother’s exhaustion and willingly gave her an opportunity to rest.
When the woman finally woke up, she immediately became concerned after realizing someone else was holding her child.
There was no emergency. Harris had simply stepped in because she could see that the mother was worn out.
The conversation that followed revealed why the woman was so exhausted.
She had recently given birth outside the country and had been unable to return to the United States with her newborn until this trip. Her family had also been waiting to meet the baby, turning the flight into an important step toward finally getting home.
For Harris, helping a passenger in that situation was not unusual.
She has made a habit of looking for small opportunities to encourage people during her flights. One of the ways she does that is by leaving passengers handwritten notes.
The new mother received one, too.
Harris’s message reminded her that she was already doing a good job and encouraged her to recognize her own strength during a demanding time.
The photograph eventually brought the encounter far more attention than Harris expected.
People online praised the flight attendant for helping a stranger without being asked. What began as a quiet moment between a tired mother and a helpful crew member quickly became a much larger conversation about compassion.
Harris later said the response affected her deeply. She viewed the attention surrounding the photograph through her faith and said she believed the moment had given people an opportunity to think about love, kindness and unity.
After expressing her appreciation, the mother took her baby back and spent the remainder of the flight with her child.
