When you think of the heroic animals that help save the day during search and rescue missions, adorable, fluffy dogs probably come to mind. Canines truly are superheroes! But there is one environment where our canine companions hit a bit of a roadblock: deep underwater.

Enter Splash—an incredibly smart, two-year-old Asian small-clawed river otter who is making history and bringing smiles to everyone he meets!

Thanks to a brilliant spark of inspiration, Splash has become a true underwater superstar. He is believed to be the only trained search and recovery otter in the entire country, and his story is guaranteed to warm your heart.

A Brilliant Spark of Inspiration

The mastermind behind this heartwarming success story is Michael Hadsell, the passionate president of Florida-based Peace River K9 Search and Rescue. With over 46 years of experience working with heroic dogs, horses, and high-tech drones, Hadsell is always looking for innovative ways to help families.

The idea struck him during a flight back from Los Angeles while reading an article about how otters navigate their watery worlds.

“I started reading about how otters can actually track odors underwater and hunt using their whiskers,” Hadsell shared enthusiastically. “And I started thinking, well, if they can work odor underwater, then we can train them!”

Driven by hope and excitement, Hadsell visited the famous Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota, Florida. After watching brilliant trainers interact with these joyful animals, he realized that training an otter used positive reinforcement techniques very similar to training a happy pup.

“I realized at that point that, yeah, I think we can do this. We can make this happen,” he said. “And so, we went to work!”

How Splash Uses His Underwater ‘Superpowers’

Otters are famously intelligent, but Splash takes it to a whole new level! He has a magnificent natural gift for underwater tracking, allowing him to explore areas like deep lakes and vast oceans where human divers might struggle.

Even more amazing is the unique way Splash smells underwater:

  • The Bubble Technique: Splash blows tiny bubbles at a target underwater.
  • The Scent Catch: He quickly breathes the bubbles back in, capturing the scent through his specialized sensory organs.
  • The Happy Alert: When he finds what he’s looking for, he swims up to Hadsell and playfully grabs his diving mask to say, “I found it! Follow me!”

Once he locates his target, Splash gently lays on top of the area so his human diving teammates can precisely mark the spot.

And what is the ultimate reward for a job well done? A delicious treat of premium salmon!

“It has to be farm-raised salmon,” Hadsell joked. “He won’t eat wild salmon.” Talk about a cute diva!

Bringing Joy and Closure to Families

Though Splash is still a youngster, his resume is absolutely sparkling! After just four months of positive training, he successfully helped recover a critical piece of evidence in a 25-year-old cold case.

Even more remarkably, at just eight months old, this little superstar located a vital clue at the bottom of a lake, bringing immense comfort and long-awaited closure to a grieving family. Since then, Splash has been happily called on for more than 20 important recovery missions.

VIP Treatment for a Very Important Otter

Splash’s health, safety, and happiness are always the number one priority for his dedicated team. To keep him safe and thriving, the team follows some very strict (and loving) guidelines:

  • Depth Limits: Splash only dives up to 30 feet to keep him safe and comfortable.
  • Weather Checks: If the water currents are too strong, Splash gets to sit back and relax.
  • The ‘Otter Spotters’: Dedicated team members wear special shirts and watch the waters constantly to protect Splash from any wild alligators.
  • Spa Days: On the rare occasion Splash needs a deep cleaning, he gets a gentle bath with Dawn dish soap, followed by a few well-deserved days off to rest.

Part of the Furry Family

When he isn’t busy being an underwater hero, Splash is just a fun-loving member of the family. He loves splashing around in Hadsell’s home pool and snuggling up for long naps after an exciting day of work.

Best of all, Splash has built an adorable bond with the team’s search dogs—especially his best furry friend, Nova!

“He’s out there with the rest of them, wanting to do his thing,” Hadsell said proudly. “He’s part of the team now.”

Splash is proof that heroes come in all shapes and sizes—sometimes with whiskers, webbed feet, and a serious love for salmon!
