A split-second decision by an Ohio man turned an ordinary Friday night into an extraordinary story of hope and community. Thanks to his swift actions, a mother and her young daughter are safe, and two families say they are now connected for a lifetime.

A Fast Response in a Critical Moment

What started as a quiet evening quickly changed for 33-year-old Yianni Sarris. He was helping his father with some yard work at his parents’ home in Mentor, Ohio, when he noticed a vehicle lose control and slide into a nearby neighborhood pond.

Inside the vehicle were 46-year-old Kim Wallace and her 8-year-old daughter, Olivia, who were on their way home from picking up dinner. Kim had suddenly experienced an unexpected medical emergency behind the wheel, causing her to lose consciousness.

Without a moment of hesitation, Sarris sprinted toward the water.

“You go right into reaction mode,” Sarris shared. “Just jump in. There’s lives in the water. You’ve got to do what’s right.”

Working Together to Bring a Family to Safety

Sarris reached young Olivia first, carefully guiding her toward a helpful neighbor named Walter, who had also rushed over to assist. Sarris then focused his efforts on helping Kim, who was still inside the vehicle.

Displaying incredible calm under pressure, Sarris entered the vehicle, safely unbuckled Kim, and guided her back to the shore. The entire, coordinated rescue took less than four minutes.

A Beautiful Reunion and a Lifelong Bond

Weeks after the event, the two families reunited at a local park to express their gratitude and celebrate a happy outcome.

  • A Mother’s Gratitude: “We just can’t thank you enough,” Kim told Sarris during their emotional meeting. “I am so grateful that you were there.”
  • A Father’s Thanks: Her husband, Chris Wallace, added, “Our family is still here today because of you.”

Kim is currently recovering well and working with doctors to ensure her continued health. Meanwhile, the two families—who were complete strangers before that night—say they have formed an unbreakable bond and look forward to being lifelong friends.
