A Texas photographer found a heartfelt way to honor the couple who helped shape his life by giving them a surprise they never expected.
Philip Winham spent months planning a special vow renewal ceremony for his grandparents, Beckie and David Roach, who have been married for nearly 59 years. While the couple knew they would be renewing their vows and taking family photos, they had no idea their grandson had recreated one of the most meaningful places from their past.
The ceremony took place at First Baptist Church in Choudrant, Louisiana—the same church where Beckie and David exchanged wedding vows in November 1967. After the photo session, Winham led the couple back home, where dozens of friends and family members were waiting to celebrate the milestone together.
For Winham, the event was about much more than an anniversary. He wanted to recognize the lasting example of faith, commitment, and family his grandparents have provided throughout his life.
Their story began long before marriage. Beckie and David first met in sixth grade after David’s family moved to Choudrant. By the time they reached high school, they were dating, and their relationship continued while they attended Louisiana Tech University.
Their plans changed in 1967 when David received a draft notice during the Vietnam War. The young couple decided to marry before he reported for duty. Although he later underwent a military physical, previous sports injuries prevented him from serving.
Over the decades, they built a life centered on family and service. Beckie dedicated 33 years to teaching at a local elementary school, while David worked as a machinist, welder, and later as a purchasing agent in the steel fabrication industry.
Winham says his grandparents each had remarkable talents. His grandmother was known for preparing meals that brought the family together, while his grandfather became the person everyone relied on to repair almost anything around the house.
What stood out even more than their skills, however, was the way they treated each other every day. One of Winham’s strongest childhood memories is watching them begin each morning together on the front porch, sharing coffee, holding hands, reading devotional passages, and praying side by side.
As he got older, Winham realized those moments would not last forever. Wanting to preserve those memories while his grandparents were still able to enjoy them, he decided to organize an event that celebrated both their marriage and their influence on future generations.
The family quietly worked behind the scenes to make the surprise happen. Relatives helped transport chairs, prepare decorations, and coordinate guests. Winham even bought fresh flowers and asked his grandmother to arrange her own bouquet, adding a personal touch to the celebration.
