People who stopped by the restaurant on Upper Main Street expecting to pay for lunch or an afternoon snack were instead told their meals had already been covered. The unexpected giveaway was made possible after an anonymous donor left several thousand dollars with the restaurant, asking that the money be used to pay for customers’ meals until it was gone.
Rather than quietly spending the cash as orders came in, franchise owners David Yee and his daughter, Christine Yee, decided to organize a special community event they called Random Act of Kindness Day. Between 1:30 p.m. and 5 p.m., the restaurant provided 356 free meals to customers, encouraging everyone who benefited to extend kindness to someone else whenever they had the chance.
The generous donation initially caught restaurant employees off guard. When the stranger handed over a large amount of cash with few instructions, staff members contacted management before using it. Christine Yee admitted she was cautious at first and even questioned whether the money was genuine. After local police confirmed the cash was legitimate, she began planning a larger celebration around the anonymous gift.
Yee also reached out to McDonald’s corporate representatives, who reportedly had never encountered a donation of this size intended to purchase meals for complete strangers. While customers occasionally pay for the next vehicle in the drive-thru, this gift was on an entirely different scale.
To make the day even more memorable, the restaurant welcomed Grimace for photos with guests and handed each customer a card explaining that an anonymous neighbor had paid for their meal. The message encouraged recipients to brighten someone else’s day by performing their own act of kindness.
The event began after the lunch rush, and employees simply stopped charging customers until every donated dollar had been used. News spread quickly through the community, with friends and family calling one another about the unexpected giveaway.
