A North Carolina woman is recovering after surviving an extraordinary nine-day ordeal that began with a simple household accident and ended with a life-saving wellness check.
On the night of June 1, Joan Rivet was preparing for bed when she slipped while stepping backward into her bathtub. The fall caused the shower curtain and rod to collapse, and she suffered a painful back injury that left her unable to climb out of the tub. Her phone was outside the bathroom, leaving her with no way to call for help.
Realizing she was trapped, Rivet spent hours trying different ways to free herself. Every attempt failed. With no one nearby to hear her calls, she soon understood that survival would depend on staying calm and making the most of what she had.
As the days passed, she drifted in and out of sleep while watching daylight fade into darkness over and over again. Eventually, she lost track of how many days had gone by.
One of the greatest challenges was finding enough water to stay alive. Although she couldn’t reach the faucet with her hands, she eventually figured out how to turn it on using her foot. She then splashed water toward her face, allowing her to drink just enough to avoid dehydration becoming even more severe.
The physical pain was constant, but Rivet later said her faith kept her focused on surviving. She spent much of the time praying and refusing to give up, believing there would eventually be a way out.
Meanwhile, her cat, Phoebe, remained just outside the bathroom door, meowing throughout the ordeal. Unfortunately, Rivet’s mountain home was too isolated for neighbors to hear either her cries or the cat’s persistent calls.
The turning point came when Rivet’s brother, Bill Lesko, became concerned after several unanswered weekly phone calls. Living about five hours away in Georgia, he contacted neighbors, who confirmed that Rivet’s vehicle was still parked outside but that no one had seen her.
Fearing something was seriously wrong, Lesko requested a wellness check from the Haywood County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies arrived at Rivet’s home on June 10 and discovered her barely conscious inside the bathtub. Emergency responders transported her to a hospital, where doctors found she had gone nine days without food. She was severely dehydrated and had developed pressure sores after remaining in the same position for so long.
Medical teams treated her with intravenous fluids and carefully reintroduced food before transferring her to a rehabilitation center. She is now undergoing physical therapy to rebuild her strength and regain her independence.
Despite everything she experienced, Rivet remains grateful for every step of her recovery. She has spoken about appreciating everyday comforts that many people take for granted, including a warm shower, clean clothes, regular meals, and simply being safe.
Rather than dwelling on the frightening experience, she says the ordeal strengthened her faith and reminded her to stay hopeful, even during life’s darkest moments. She credits prayer with helping her maintain a positive mindset while she waited to be rescued.
The incident has also inspired Rivet’s neighbors to look out for one another more closely, particularly older adults and those who live alone. Friends hope her remarkable survival story encourages others to regularly check on loved ones and recognize how a simple phone call or wellness check can make the difference between life and death.
What began as an ordinary evening quickly turned into a fight for survival, but thanks to the concern of family members and the quick response of law enforcement, Rivet is now on the road to recovery—and her story serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of community, perseverance, and never giving up hope.
