When a Kansas City woman battling Stage 4 breast cancer had her electric tricycle stolen, she feared losing the transportation she depended on to reach lifesaving oncology appointments. But one Kansas City police officer refused to let the case go cold.
After the theft on Mother’s Day, Officer JP Young of the Kansas City Police Department promised Olivia he would keep searching for her three-wheeled e-bike. Weeks passed, but he continued watching for any sign of the missing trike while on patrol.
About a month later, Young and his partner spotted a man riding an electric bike that appeared to have been spray-painted. Looking closer, Young noticed traces of the original paint underneath and suspected it was Olivia’s stolen trike. He immediately sent her a photo, and she confirmed it was hers.
The discovery came as a surprise even to the officer, who later returned the recovered bike to its grateful owner.
Olivia shared her appreciation in a Facebook post, praising Officer Young for staying committed long after the theft occurred. She said he patiently followed up on every tip she sent and never gave up searching. She also recalled that his excitement when returning the bike was just as memorable as getting it back, saying he smiled as though he had uncovered a hidden treasure.
Although friends had already raised money to buy Olivia a replacement electric trike, it had not been assembled correctly and remained unusable. Her original plan was to sell the recovered bike to help pay for repairs on the new one so she could regain reliable transportation for medical appointments and daily life.
After seeing the story online, a volunteer with Urban Trail Co. stepped forward with another act of kindness. The cycling advocacy group’s volunteer offered to repair Olivia’s replacement bike free of charge, explaining that bicycles are an important part of their community and that fellow volunteers were eager to help her get back on the road.
Olivia quickly accepted the offer, saying the unexpected assistance would make a tremendous difference. Thanks to the determination of one police officer and the generosity of local volunteers, she is now one step closer to having dependable transportation again as she continues her fight against cancer.
