A potentially deadly crash on Interstate 5 in Washington ended in a remarkable rescue after a passing driver used his own vehicle to safely stop an out-of-control SUV carrying a mother and her young son.
The incident unfolded Tuesday on southbound I-5 near Fife, Washington. Witnesses watched as an SUV swerved across multiple lanes before repeatedly striking the concrete median after reportedly colliding with another vehicle. Drivers quickly realized the person behind the wheel was experiencing a serious medical emergency rather than simply losing control.
One of those motorists was Paul Jackson of Roy, Washington. He said he became alarmed when he saw the SUV suddenly cut across three lanes of traffic. After pulling alongside the vehicle, he saw the driver appeared unresponsive, with her head tilted back and her eyes rolled upward. He also noticed a young boy secured in a child safety seat, clearly frightened by the unfolding situation.
Rather than waiting for emergency responders, Jackson made a split-second decision to intervene. Using his Kia Forte, he carefully positioned his car next to the SUV and gradually guided it toward the concrete barrier. By maintaining steady contact, he was able to slow the vehicle and bring it to a controlled stop without causing a more serious collision.
Video recorded by another driver captured the dramatic rescue, showing Jackson’s vehicle gently pushing the SUV against the barrier until both vehicles safely came to a halt. The maneuver prevented the SUV from continuing through busy highway traffic and potentially causing a catastrophic crash.
Once the SUV stopped, Jackson immediately jumped into action. He shifted the vehicle into park, helped remove the young child from the SUV, and remained with the driver until police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and other Good Samaritans arrived at the scene.
The unexpected rescue did have one small consequence. Jackson was late picking up his wife’s birthday cake. Knowing the story sounded unbelievable, he sent her photos from the highway to explain why he hadn’t arrived on time, later joking that it was probably the best excuse he could have had.
While Jackson has laughed about the delay, he said helping was never something he had to think twice about. He believes he was in the right place at the right time and felt a responsibility to act when others were in danger.
He also hopes the experience reminds people that opportunities to help others can appear without warning. Instead of wondering later whether he should have stepped in, Jackson chose to act immediately.
Because one driver refused to keep going, a frightening emergency on one of Washington’s busiest highways ended with both the mother and her child brought to safety instead of becoming another tragic traffic accident.
