An Ohio family’s long search for their missing dog came to an emotional end after an unexpected social media post helped bring the pet home nearly eight months after he disappeared.

Dylan Reedy had raised Timber, a hound mix, since the dog was just five weeks old. In late November 2025, Reedy returned home and discovered that Timber was gone. No one knew exactly how the dog had escaped, and despite weeks and eventually months of searching, there were no clear signs of where he had gone.

What Reedy did not know was that Timber had been found just one day after disappearing.

On Nov. 28, 2025, the dog was brought to Animal Friends Humane Society as a stray. The shelter was nearly 90 minutes from Reedy’s home, making it unlikely that the family would immediately discover where Timber had ended up.

Timber arrived with a serious injury to one of his legs. Shelter workers cared for him during his stray-hold period before arranging for him to stay with a foster family so he could continue recovering.

At the shelter, he was given the name Flash.

After about a month in foster care, Flash returned to the humane society. What followed was an unusually long stay. He remained at the shelter for roughly 220 days, spending much of that time in the same kennel while potential adopters came and went.

Staff and volunteers made sure he received plenty of attention. He went on walks, participated in playgroups, spent time with other dogs and enjoyed regular affection from people at the shelter. Visitors often stopped to admire him and offer treats, but none of them realized that the dog was already someone’s beloved family pet.

Then a routine shelter photo changed everything.

One of the humane society’s longtime supporters, known as Ferg, stopped by to make a donation. As part of the visit, a shelter dog was included in a photograph. Ferg later shared the picture online.

That photo caught the attention of Reedy’s girlfriend.

She immediately suspected that the dog pictured was Timber, the pet the family had been searching for since the previous November.

Ferg was contacted and arranged to meet Reedy at the shelter. After months of uncertainty, the family finally had a chance to see their missing dog again.

When Timber saw Reedy, shelter staff said his reaction made it clear that he recognized his owner. His tail began wagging, and the long-awaited reunion quickly turned emotional as Timber greeted the man who had been searching for him.

The shelter had spent months caring for the dog they knew as Flash. Only later did they learn that he had never truly been without a family.

Timber’s remarkable journey is a reminder that lost pets can sometimes survive for months while remaining surprisingly close to a reunion. In this case, a single photograph posted online helped connect a missing dog with the family that had never stopped looking for him.

After nearly eight months apart, Timber was finally going home.
