Brent Cabahug had only been working at Walmart for a short time when he found himself in a situation that called for more than simply scanning groceries and completing a transaction.

Cabahug, a senior at Stillwater Area High School, moved to Minnesota from the Philippines with his mother and sister in September 2023. His family came to the United States hoping to build a better future, and he says he was raised in a home where helping others was considered important.

Now, while balancing high school and his first part-time job, the teenager has drawn attention for something he did during an ordinary evening shift at Walmart.

Last Tuesday, an elderly customer was checking out when her credit card was declined several times. Dani Dircks, who was shopping with her daughter, Sailor, was nearby and noticed that the woman appeared increasingly frustrated.

What happened next caught Dircks completely off guard.

Rather than simply waiting for the situation to be resolved, Cabahug stepped in and paid for the woman’s groceries himself. He did not know the customer personally, and according to Dircks, there was no expectation that anyone would recognize or reward him for what he had done.

Cabahug later explained that he was not looking for attention. He simply believed that helping the woman was the right thing to do.

The elderly customer apparently did not realize that the young cashier had covered the cost of her groceries. For Cabahug, however, the moment was not about receiving praise. It was simply an opportunity to help someone who appeared to be struggling.

Dircks felt differently.

After witnessing what happened, she decided that Cabahug deserved some recognition. She created a GoFundMe campaign with the goal of helping the teenager purchase a vehicle and pursue his plans for a career in health care after graduating from high school.

The response has given the story a second chapter, turning a small act at a checkout counter into an opportunity for people in the community to support a young man with ambitious goals.

Cabahug hopes to eventually purchase a 2019 Honda Civic and become a certified nursing assistant, a career path that would allow him to continue doing something he says has always mattered to him: helping other people.

For Dircks, the teenager’s actions offered a reminder that generosity can sometimes appear in the most ordinary places.

Cabahug, meanwhile, remains focused on what comes next. He came to the United States with his family looking for new opportunities, and his experience at Walmart has now connected him with a community that wants to see him succeed.

His simple decision to help a stranger may have lasted only a few minutes, but it has already opened the door to possibilities far beyond that checkout line.
