When two young boys arrived at Sam Restifo’s home in Saginaw, Michigan, in February 2025, he likely had no idea how much his life was about to change.
The boys, who were 14 and 12 at the time, had been left in his care by a woman Sam barely knew. What could have been a temporary arrangement quickly became something much more serious.
The two children had very little family support, and there was a real possibility that entering foster care could mean being placed in separate homes. Sam decided he could not simply walk away from them.
He took on the responsibility of caring for both boys, even though he was dealing with serious problems of his own.
The household did not have running water, and the electricity had been disconnected. Sam was using a generator to keep some basic necessities running. At the same time, getting the boys enrolled in school became another major obstacle because he did not have legal guardianship.
Despite the challenges, Sam continued caring for them.
He explained that leaving them on their own could have resulted in the brothers being separated, something he desperately wanted to prevent.
Then their circumstances became known to the wider community.
After a local television station reported on the family’s situation, strangers began stepping forward to help. A GoFundMe fundraiser eventually collected more than $15,000, providing Sam with money to address the immediate needs of the household and care for the boys.
The assistance has already started changing their situation.
Sam expects to have both water and electricity restored at the home. He is also working toward getting the boys back into school and plans to make sure they have necessities such as clothing and shoes.
The financial support has also given him some breathing room as he works through the complicated process of seeking legal guardianship.
There has been another unexpected development as well. After people learned about his situation, interest in Sam’s gutter business increased, potentially giving him another source of income as he works to create a more secure home for the boys.
But the story is not simply about donations or fixing a house.
Over the months, Sam has formed a close relationship with the two children. What began as an unexpected responsibility has become a family-like bond.
Sam said the experience has affected him just as much as it has helped the boys.
His decision to take them in came at a time when he had limited resources and plenty of problems to handle. Yet he chose to keep the two brothers together and give them a place where they could feel safe.
Now, thanks to people who heard what the family was going through and decided to step in, the outlook is considerably brighter.
The boys have a chance to return to school, the home is moving toward having basic utilities again, and Sam has received support as he works toward making their living arrangement more permanent.
Sometimes, a difficult situation changes because one person decides that walking away is not an option. In this case, Sam made that choice when two children needed someone willing to stand by them.
