For more than a decade, an unlikely friendship between a young woman and her elderly neighbor has quietly transformed both of their lives — and now their heartwarming story is inspiring thousands online.

When Julissa Gomez first met her neighbor, Delmar Harter, back in 2015, she never imagined the retired 87-year-old would one day become part of her family. At the time, Julissa’s parents had just moved into the neighborhood, and Delmar was simply the quiet older man living nearby.

What started with small acts of kindness — offering rides to church, sharing meals, and checking in on him from time to time — slowly grew into something much deeper. As the years passed, Julissa and her family realized Delmar often spent birthdays and holidays alone. Instead of letting him face those moments in isolation, they began inviting him into their celebrations.

Before long, he wasn’t treated like a neighbor anymore. He became family.

Their connection grew even stronger during one of the most painful chapters of Julissa’s life. After her father passed away in 2020, Delmar stood by the family with unwavering support. His compassion during that difficult time left a lasting impact on Julissa and strengthened the bond they already shared.

At the same time, Julissa’s husband Anthony stepped in to continue the close relationship the family had built with Delmar. The two quickly formed a friendship of their own, spending time together like lifelong companions. For Delmar, who never married and whose relatives live in other states, the Gomez family became the closest thing to home.

Recently, their touching story reached an emotional milestone.

Julissa and Delmar decided to share their friendship with the world by co-writing a children’s book titled The Friendship Next Door with Delmar. The project was created not only to spread a message of kindness and connection, but also to help support Delmar’s living and medical expenses.

To their surprise, the book’s success changed his life in a meaningful way.

One of Delmar’s biggest financial burdens had been his expensive hearing aids. Living mostly on Social Security made it difficult for him to keep up with the cost. But thanks to book sales and support from people online, Julissa was able to deliver incredible news: his hearing aids were finally paid off.

When she told him, Delmar became overwhelmed with emotion. Tears filled his eyes as the weight of financial stress lifted from his shoulders. For Julissa and her family, it was a powerful reminder that simple compassion can truly make a difference.

Today, the proceeds from the book continue helping Delmar cover daily living expenses and healthcare needs — support he once struggled to manage alone.

But beyond the financial help, Julissa hopes their story encourages others to look more closely at the people around them. In a world where loneliness affects so many older adults, she believes even the smallest gesture — a visit, a conversation, an invitation to dinner — can completely change someone’s life.

Their friendship proves that family is not always defined by blood. Sometimes, it begins with a simple hello next door.
