A normal afternoon at a seaside café suddenly turned into a dangerous rescue when the owner spotted three children struggling in the water.
Steven Doorey-Williams, 56, was working at Bayside Café near Broadstairs in East Kent on Aug. 5 when he became aware that something was wrong at nearby Dumpton Gap beach. A woman on the shoreline was desperately calling for assistance as the children battled the rough conditions offshore.
From where he stood, Doorey-Williams could see that the situation was becoming increasingly dangerous. The children were at risk of being carried farther away from the beach by the unsettled water, according to reports.
Rather than wait for professional rescuers to arrive, he decided to intervene.
Doorey-Williams took a flotation buoy from outside his café and headed into the sea. He went in wearing the clothes he had been working in, despite the difficult conditions.
His first priority was reaching two of the children. Using the buoy for support, he managed to bring a girl and a boy toward safety. He then turned his attention to another boy who was farther out and in deeper water.
The rescue was recorded on video, giving witnesses a firsthand look at the risks involved. One person who saw the incident described Doorey-Williams as acting without hesitation when the children needed help.
His response may have been influenced by decades spent in professions where remaining calm during an emergency is essential.
Before purchasing the beachside café, Doorey-Williams served with an elite military unit in Scotland. He later worked as a firefighter with the London Fire Brigade before retiring from the service.
The beach incident was not the first time he has helped people in danger. Reports indicate that he has now been involved in three rescues.
Interestingly, the people closest to him were not aware of what had happened right away. His wife and 11-year-old daughter reportedly learned about the incident later that day.
For Doorey-Williams, the dramatic event was another example of being in the right place when someone needed immediate assistance. What began as an ordinary workday ended with three children being brought out of dangerous water and back toward safety.
The incident also highlights the unpredictable nature of coastal waters. Conditions that appear manageable from the shore can quickly become hazardous, particularly for children who may struggle against waves and currents.
The rescue has since attracted attention because of the café owner’s decision to leave his business behind and enter the water himself rather than simply watch the situation unfold.
