A local resident in one of Northern California’s wealthiest communities was stunned to learn that teachers in her school district ranked near the bottom when it came to state funding. Instead of simply raising concerns, Maja Kristin decided to take action—and what happened next left nearly 100 teachers speechless.
Kristin asked the Ross Valley School District to bring together 100 teachers from its K-8 schools for a meeting on August 13. She specifically requested that the teachers not be told why they were being gathered.
Once everyone was in the conference room, Kristin explained what she had discovered: Teachers in the district were earning less than their counterparts in other nearby school districts, despite being located in affluent Marin County.
Marin County is known for its high household incomes and expensive real estate. Located just north of San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge, it ranks among the wealthiest counties in the country. Yet Ross Valley falls within the bottom 20% of California school districts when it comes to state funding.
That disparity prompted Kristin to look for another way to help.
She worked with district principals to distribute envelopes to the teachers at the meeting. The teachers were told to open them, revealing an unexpected surprise.
Inside each envelope was a check for $9,161.70.
The individual payments were part of a much larger $1 million donation Kristin made to the school district. The goal was to provide direct financial support to the teachers and help address the gap she had discovered.
Local news station KRON 4 was present for the reveal and captured the teachers’ reactions as they realized what they had received.
For many educators, the unexpected money represented far more than a bonus. Sydney Dean, one of the teachers who received a check, described the gesture as life-changing.
Another teacher, Amber Bunnell-Wild, expressed surprise at receiving such a generous gift from someone she had never met or whose children she had not taught.
The unusual donation quickly turned an ordinary school meeting into a moment the teachers were unlikely to forget. For Kristin, it was a way to put a substantial private donation directly into the hands of educators after discovering what she viewed as a troubling gap in school funding and teacher compensation.
