Sometimes, a stranger’s decision to pay attention can completely change another person’s future.
That is exactly what happened after LaCinda Thackeray, a Utah resident, noticed an airport employee struggling to walk while waiting for her flight home from Southern California on May 21. She had been attending a family funeral and was sitting at John Wayne Airport when she saw the worker slowly crossing the tarmac.
Without knowing his name or his circumstances, Thackeray felt compelled to share what she had witnessed. Before boarding her flight, she recorded a brief video and posted it on TikTok, hoping someone might recognize the man. Her thought was simple: if enough people learned about him, perhaps they could help him retire after years of hard work.
She never expected the video to explode online.
Within hours, the clip had attracted more than one million views. As it spread across social media, viewers worked together to identify the airport employee as James Blair, a 64-year-old Navy veteran who has spent decades maintaining aircraft.
Blair served in the U.S. Navy throughout the 1980s before building a career in aviation maintenance. After leaving the military, he worked for years at Los Angeles International Airport, later spent time driving trucks, and eventually joined the maintenance team at John Wayne Airport in 2006, where he continues working today.
Despite his age and chronic knee pain, retirement had never been financially realistic. Blair has said he intended to keep working for as long as his body would allow because he also provides care for his elderly mother, who is receiving hospice care. Supporting her has remained his top priority, even as his own health has become more challenging.
As more people learned about Blair’s situation, social media users urged Thackeray to organize a fundraiser. She launched a GoFundMe campaign, expecting only modest support.
Instead, donations poured in from around the world.
The campaign grew so quickly that it created an unexpected obstacle. Blair had never used social media and did not even own a smartphone, making it difficult to connect him with the fundraiser. His supervisor stepped in, driving about 90 minutes to Blair’s home to help him create the necessary account so the donations could be transferred directly to him.
After everything was finalized, Thackeray traveled back to California to personally hand Blair a check totaling $174,000.
Blair described the overwhelming generosity as something he never imagined experiencing. Knowing that thousands of people were willing to contribute their own money to help someone they had never met left him deeply humbled.
The response reached far beyond the United States, with messages of encouragement arriving from people across multiple countries. Many simply wanted Blair to know they appreciated his years of service and hoped the donations would ease the financial burden he had quietly carried for so long.
The unexpected support also had a personal impact. Blair said the experience renewed his faith and reminded him that acts of kindness can still unite complete strangers.
Although he has not stopped working, the fundraiser has already improved his daily life. One of his first purchases was a new bed, something he had postponed while focusing on caring for his mother and covering everyday expenses.
What began as a few seconds of video recorded through an airport window became a worldwide effort to help a veteran who had spent decades serving both his country and his community. A single social media post inspired thousands of people to contribute, demonstrating how one compassionate act can create a ripple effect that reaches far beyond its original moment.
Today, nearly 6,000 donors have contributed more than $180,500 to Blair’s fundraiser.
