A quick-thinking teenager from Gilbert, Arizona, is receiving widespread praise after helping rescue a 75-year-old woman with dementia who had become lost while wandering in dangerous triple-digit temperatures.
Fourteen-year-old Royal Cothrun was riding his bicycle while wearing Google smart glasses when he noticed Teresa Morgan walking alone along a sidewalk. Something about her behavior immediately caught his attention. She appeared confused, overheated, and unsure of where she was going.
Instead of continuing on his way, Royal stopped to check if she needed assistance. That simple decision may have saved her life.
Teen Recognizes Woman in Distress
Royal later told ABC 15 Arizona that the woman looked like she was struggling and didn’t seem to know where she was. Trusting his instincts, he began speaking with her to better understand the situation.

While talking with Morgan, Royal patiently helped her recall her son Jeff Morgan’s phone number. Once she remembered it, he immediately placed the call.
Jeff Morgan rushed to the location, where emergency medical personnel also arrived to evaluate his mother’s condition after her time in the extreme heat.
Jeff later said he felt incredibly fortunate that his mother crossed paths with someone willing to stay by her side instead of walking away. According to the family, Teresa Morgan had only recently been diagnosed with dementia, making the incident especially frightening.

Emergency responders and community leaders praised Royal for remaining calm and compassionate throughout the encounter.
Captain Ryan McHugh of the Gilbert Fire Department said the situation could have ended much differently had the teenager not stepped in when he did.
In recognition of his actions, Royal was honored by the Gilbert Fire Department, the Air National Guard, and Congressman Andy Briggs for his willingness to help a stranger in need.
His mother said she was proud of her son but not surprised by his actions, explaining that helping others has always been part of his character.
