A routine early morning became a life-changing event for an Alabama teenager after his instincts led him to help a woman facing a medical emergency.
Before dawn on June 30, 17-year-old Johnson Thompson was unable to sleep, so he headed to his family’s workshop in Tuscumbia earlier than usual. As he settled in, he noticed a vehicle slowly pulling into a nearby parking lot. The driver appeared disoriented, prompting Thompson to walk over and make sure everything was alright.
The woman, later identified as 76-year-old Fannie Garner, explained that she was suffering from an intense headache and was trying to locate the closest hospital. Seeing that she was struggling to remain steady, Thompson immediately recognized that she needed help.
Instead of simply giving directions, the teenager brought Garner a chair so she could rest and immediately contacted emergency services. He stayed with her, offering reassurance while waiting for paramedics to arrive.
Medical evaluations later revealed that Garner had suffered a brain hemorrhage, a potentially life-threatening condition that requires immediate treatment. She was transported by helicopter to a Birmingham hospital, where doctors were able to provide specialized care.
What made the incident even more remarkable was that Garner had unknowingly driven nearly 20 miles from her home in Cherokee before stopping in Tuscumbia. After recovering, she said she remembered very little about the drive and had no clear recollection of how she reached the parking lot. The only thing she recalled was experiencing an overwhelming headache before everything became confusing.
Garner believes someone was watching over her that morning. She has said she cannot explain how she managed to arrive safely at a place where someone noticed she was in trouble, but she is deeply grateful that Thompson happened to be there.
Her family was equally determined to thank the stranger who had stepped in during a critical moment. The day after the emergency, Garner’s sister, Gwen Goodloe, retraced the ambulance’s route, located the warehouse where Thompson’s family works, and eventually found the teenager through local connections.
The reunion was emotional for everyone involved. As a token of appreciation, Garner’s family presented Thompson with a homemade award recognizing his quick response and compassion. They said his willingness to stop, ask questions, and call for help likely made a significant difference during a life-threatening medical crisis.
Family members also shared that the experience renewed their belief that there are still people willing to help complete strangers without hesitation. They described Thompson as a young man whose character and compassion stood out during a frightening situation.
Although the emergency has passed, the connection between the two families continues. Garner says she will never forget the teenager who came to her aid when she needed it most, and her family has already made plans to cheer him on when he graduates from high school next year.
