Just days before Christmas in 2000, a late-night call sent South Bend Police Lieutenant Gene Eyster to investigate a heartbreaking case. A newborn baby had been found abandoned inside a cardboard box in the hallway of an apartment building in South Bend, Indiana.

The infant, wrapped in blankets and a flannel shirt, had been discovered by college students. There was no note, no identifying information, and no clues about who had left him there.

Concerned for the child’s well-being, Eyster stopped on his way to the hospital and purchased a teddy bear. He hoped the small gesture would provide some comfort to the newborn during an uncertain time.

Because the baby was found only a few days before Christmas, Eyster gave him a special nickname during the investigation. The case stayed with him long after it was closed.

Authorities eventually located adoptive parents for the child, and the infant began a new life with a loving family. While Eyster continued his police career and later retired in 2019, he often wondered what became of the child.

More than two decades later, he unexpectedly received an answer.

Twenty-three years after the baby was found, Eyster received a phone call from South Bend Police Officer Josh Morgan. Morgan had an astonishing revelation: the abandoned infant was now sitting beside him.

That infant had grown up to become Matthew Hegedus-Stewart, a police officer serving in the same department.

The remarkable discovery happened when Morgan and Hegedus-Stewart responded to a call at the very apartment complex where the newborn had been abandoned years earlier. During the response, Hegedus-Stewart mentioned that he had been left there as a baby. Curious, Morgan reviewed the old police records and found Eyster’s name connected to the original case.

The reunion between Eyster and Hegedus-Stewart took place on March 22 and quickly became an emotional moment for both men.

For Eyster, the meeting carried even deeper meaning. Earlier that year, he had lost his only son, Nicholas. Seeing the young officer brought back memories of his son and provided comfort during a difficult chapter of life.

Today, Hegedus-Stewart is engaged to his fiancée, Jillian, and the couple are raising their young daughter, Aspen. They are also preparing to welcome a son into their growing family.

Looking back, Hegedus-Stewart says he once struggled with questions about why he had been abandoned. Over time, however, he developed a greater understanding of the difficult circumstances his birth mother may have faced. He credits his adoptive parents for providing a loving home and helping shape the person he became.

What began as a tragic discovery in a cardboard box eventually became an extraordinary story of resilience, family, and unexpected connections. For Eyster, seeing the abandoned newborn grow into a respected police officer was a reminder that life’s most unlikely stories can come full circle.
