What began as a routine roadside assistance call on a Wisconsin interstate ramp quickly turned into an unexpected rescue that changed one state trooper’s life.

Wisconsin State Trooper Brody Schmitz responded to help a motorist who had pulled over near Interstate 90. During the encounter, the driver shared a troubling account. She told Schmitz that she had witnessed someone throw several kittens from a moving vehicle.

According to a post from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the vehicle responsible was never located. However, the report led Schmitz to search the area, where he discovered one surviving kitten.

Rather than leaving the animal’s future to chance, Schmitz transported the small tuxedo kitten to a nearby animal shelter so it could receive proper care while he finished his shift. Before leaving, though, he made it clear that he intended to provide the kitten with a permanent home.

The trooper later adopted the kitten and named him Toby.

Photos shared by the Wisconsin State Patrol showed Schmitz holding the young cat after the rescue, highlighting a moment that quickly captured attention online. What started as an ordinary workday had unexpectedly introduced a new member to his family.

The story sparked a wave of reactions across social media, with many people sharing their own experiences of rescuing abandoned animals in unusual circumstances.

One commenter joked that animals often seem to find their owners when they need them most.

Others recounted similar encounters. One person described rescuing a kitten trapped inside a vehicle’s engine compartment and calling police for assistance before attempting to free it. Another shared a story about responding to a call involving an allegedly aggressive animal, only to discover a young kitten that eventually became a beloved pet.

Stories like Toby’s continue to resonate because they highlight how unexpected moments can lead to lasting bonds. While the circumstances that brought the kitten into Schmitz’s life were unfortunate, the outcome provided a second chance for an animal that might otherwise have been left behind.

For Trooper Schmitz, a routine traffic call ended with far more than a completed report. It ended with a new companion waiting for him at home—a reminder that sometimes life’s most meaningful surprises arrive when they are least expected.
