When 1-year-old Pete became separated from his owner in New York City, he didn’t panic. The young beagle mix relied on something even more valuable—his memory.
On May 14, Pete was out for a walk with one of his owners when his leash unexpectedly broke. Suddenly alone in one of the busiest cities in the world, the dog found himself navigating unfamiliar streets without his family by his side.
Rather than wandering aimlessly, Pete set off with a destination in mind. The determined pup traveled roughly a mile through Brooklyn to reach a place he knew well: his favorite doggy daycare, Pooch Play and Stay.
Staff members at the daycare were going about their normal routines when they noticed an unexpected visitor outside the front door. Security footage captured Pete pacing eagerly near the entrance, clearly hoping someone would let him inside.
Grace Bodkin, the daycare’s administrative manager, said employees were surprised to see Pete arrive by himself. At first, they were confused about why he was alone, but they quickly realized something was wrong when they noticed how dirty he was from his journey.
After welcoming Pete inside, staff immediately contacted his owners while making sure he was comfortable and safe. They even gave him a bath while working to reunite him with his family.
