For many teenagers, graduating from high school is a proud moment filled with celebration and excitement about the future. For 18-year-old Eric Schultz of Oahu, Hawaii, earning his diploma represented something even greater — perseverance through years of hardship and uncertainty.
Schultz recently graduated from Waianae High School after overcoming homelessness and difficult family circumstances that began during his early teenage years. Despite the obstacles he faced, he stayed focused on his education and never gave up on his dream of walking across the graduation stage.
As he accepted his diploma in front of classmates, teachers, and supporters, the emotional moment marked the end of a long and challenging journey. Schultz admitted he nearly broke down in tears during the ceremony but managed to hold himself together while proudly receiving his diploma.
His struggles began around the age of 15 when his parents faced addiction issues, leaving him without stable housing. For nearly a year, Schultz lived out of a car while continuing to attend school each day. Even while dealing with homelessness, he remained determined to finish high school and create a better future for himself.
Instead of allowing his circumstances to define him, Schultz focused on his goals. He continued attending classes, worked hard academically, and stayed committed to graduating despite the emotional and physical toll of unstable living conditions.
Homelessness among young people remains a growing concern across Hawaii. Hundreds of minors on Oahu are currently experiencing housing insecurity, making Schultz’s achievement especially inspiring for many in the community.
Even while facing his own hardships, Schultz also dedicated time to helping others. Earlier this year, he participated in efforts to distribute donated supplies and essential items to families struggling with homelessness. Seeing children in similar situations deeply affected him and strengthened his desire to give back.
One of the biggest turning points in Schultz’s life came through the kindness of community members who stepped in to support him. Among them was Desiree Adams, a local woman Schultz reached out to when he needed food and assistance.
Adams welcomed him into her home and became what is known in Hawaiian culture as a “hanai auntie,” a term connected to caring for and nurturing someone as family even without a biological relationship. She helped Schultz return to school, complete paperwork, and stay on track academically while also providing structure and encouragement.
According to Adams, Schultz earned his success through his own determination and willingness to change his situation. She praised his commitment to setting goals and following through despite the many challenges he faced.
Now that he has graduated, Schultz is looking ahead toward a brighter future. He plans to attend trade school to study plumbing and hopes to continue helping people experiencing homelessness in his community.
Currently living at a transitional youth shelter in Oahu, Schultz says he hopes his story encourages others to support struggling students and invest in programs that help vulnerable young people succeed.
